BEDLAM–THE MUSICAL

BOOK AND LYRICS BY GREG ATKINS   ·  MUSIC BY jOSEPH ALFUSO

Bedlam—The Musical is based on the actual inmates and hospital staff who lived and worked in the notorious 19th century insane asylum, St. Mary of Bethlehem Hospital, in London.

It was here that the early medical profession treated the then unknown conditions such as Mania, Religiosity, Depression, and Schizophrenia with primitive and horrific treatments, such as ice-baths, early electrical shock and trepanation.

Bedlam is as timely today as it was two centuries ago as it echoes societies struggles with mental illness and the terrible toll it takes on rich and poor alike. No one is immune.

Bedlam–The Musical, though dark and intense, also celebrates the human conditions of hope, redemption and love, along with humorous moments as we meet each of the inmates, hear their stories and come to know the motives and personal struggles of each character.
